Das ADHS, in den Anfängen als „Hyperprosexie“, dann als „Aufmerksamkeitsstörung „bezeichnet, kennt zahlreiche Synonyme: ADHD, Hyperaktivitätssyndrom, hyperkinetische Störung mit Intelligenzminderung und Bewegungsstereotypien, frühkindliches exogenes Psychosyndrom, minimaler Hirnschaden, minimale cerebrale Dysfunktion u. a..
Menschen, die an ADHS leiden, zeigen eine Kombination von Störungen der Aufmerksamkeit und Hyperaktivität. Sie sind leicht ablenkbar, neigen zu Flüchtigkeitsfehlern, haben Schwierigkeiten, bei einer Sache zu bleiben, sind dabei auch motorisch unruhig und müssen ständig in Bewegung sein. Es kommt zu Lernschwierigkeiten, weshalb Schule und überhaupt längeres geistiges Arbeiten zur besonderen Belastung werden, ferner zu Unzuverlässigkeiten bei Terminen und Verabredungen.
Je nach Schwerpunkt der Störungen werden 3 Subtypen unterschieden:
- Mischtyp (häufigster Typus)
- vorwiegend unaufmerksamer Typus
- vorwiegend hyperaktiver Typus
