Biologische Psychiatrie
Die biologische Psychiatrie existiert seit circa 1970. Die Vertreter dieser Richtung sind der Überzeugung, psychische Krankheiten (Störungen) wie Schizophrenie, Depressionen, Angststörungen, Zwänge, Essstörungen, Suchterkrankungen etc. haben v. a. einen biologischen Ursprung. Entsprechend forscht die biologische Psychiatrie nach biochemischen, neuro-endokrinologischen, molekulargenetischen und pharmakologischen „Markern“. Sie versucht ferner, die Psychopathologie auf der Basis eindeutiger Forschungs- und diagnostischer Kriterien allgemein verbindlich und international vergleichbar zu klassifizieren. Die in den USA entwickelte und heute international gebräuchliche multiaxiale Klassifikation psychischer Störungen nach DSM IV der American Psychiatric Association (APA) basiert auf den Erkenntnissen der biologischen Psychiatrie.
Seit 1978 gibt es die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Biologische Psychiatrie. Wer Mitglied werden möchte „soll mindestens 2 Jahre praktisch oder wissenschaftlich in der biologischen Psychiatrie tätig gewesen sein; außerdem sollten mindestens 2 wissenschaftliche Arbeiten aus diesem Gebiet vorliegen.“
