Der Begriff „Autismus“ kennzeichnete ursprünglich nach E. Bleuler (1911) spezielle, bei der Schizophrenie beobachtete Zustände des Losgelöstseins von der Wirklichkeit und Versunkenseins in das eigene Innenleben.

Die ICD-10 ordnet den Autismus ein in der Rubrik „tiefgreifende Entwicklungsstörungen“ und unterscheidet die beiden Formen

  • frühkindlicher Autismus (syn.: Kanner-Syndrom) und
  • atypischer Autismus

Frühkindlicher Autismus (Kanner-Syndrom)

Ähnlich wie beim Asperger-Syndrom finden sich beim frühkindlichen Autismus (Kanner-Syndrom) tiefgreifende Störungen in der sozialen Interaktion und in der Kommunikation sowie ein stark eingeschränktes Verhalten mit Stereotypien. Charakterische Unterschiede zum Asperger-Syndrom sind folgende:

  • Beginn vor dem 3. Lj.
  • das Vorhandensein einer allgemeinen Entwicklungsverzögerung, meist von Geburt an,
  • das Vorhandensein einer Sprachentwicklungsstörung und
  • das Vorhandensein einer Störung der kognitiven Entwicklung.
  • deutliche Intelligenzminderung bei circa 2/3 der Fälle, selten normale Intelligenz

Häufige zusätzliche Symptome beim frühkindlichen Autismus sind

  • Phobien
  • Schlafstörungen
  • Essstörungen
  • Aggressionen und Wutausbrüche
  • Selbstverletzungen (Beissen in den Handrücken)

Atypischer Autismus

Kindliche Wesenszüge, die zwar als autistisch bezeichnet werden müssen, aber nicht alle geforderten Kriterien des frühkindlichen Autismus erfüllen und vorwiegend bei Kindern mit schwerster Intelligenzminderung beobachtet wird.
