Mit „Agoraphobie“ (= Platzangst) bezeichnet man die umschriebene und reproduzierbare Angst (Phobie) eines Menschen, einen freien Platz zu betreten oder auch nur die Wohnung zu verlassen und sich auf die offene Strasse zu begeben.

Agoraphobie tritt häufig mit Panikattacke und deutet meist auf das Vorliegen einer neurotischen Störung.

In der Psychiatrie verwendet man den Begriff Agoraphobie inzwischen meist in einem erweiterten Sinne auch für die Angst vor grossen Menschenmengen oder vor ungeschützten Situationen ohne Flucht- oder Rückzugsmöglichkeit.
